How to start a poultry farming business in Nigeria (Step by Step Guide)

Step-By-Step Guide to Starting a Profitable Poultry Farming Business in Nigeria

Poultry farming business is widely regarded as the fastest growing agricultural business in Nigeria and this is because every Nigerian home consumes poultry products daily. There are over 180 million Nigerians who need poultry as meat and egg consumption.

While ducks, turkey, guinea fowl, quail e.t.c fall under poultry farming; Chicken is the most cultivated and demanded of all poultry and since the ban on importation of poultry products it has been impossible for existing farmers to meet up with the demand.

I have been doing this business for a couple of years now and I would be sharing my personal experience on how to start and run a profitable chicken farming business. As a matter of fact anyone can do this business as your educational or financial background does not matter; you can start with what you can afford now and grow as big as you want over time. The most important thing is that you are committed to learning and starting.

Why should I start a Poultry Farming Business?

The below are some of the reason why it is a sound business decision to start a Poultry farming business

  • High Demand: The demand for poultry products is more than the current supply hence the scarcity sometimes experienced when you go to the market where chickens are sold.
  • Quick Turnaround – In about 19 to 22 weeks you birds are ready for the market and within a year you can double your start-up capital. We have made a detailed financial breakdown which you can access in the business guide.
  • High Profit Margin – A fully grown chicken sells between 2,000 to 2,600 Naira in Nigeria. Therefore, if you produce 1,000 chickens in your farm, you will be making about N2 million by the time they are completely sold. If you are into egg production a flock of 1,000 birds is capable of laying up to 23 crates of eggs daily is sold for about N600 for small eggs and N700 for bigger eggs and generating about N16,000 daily.

So, you must be wondering how you can go about starting your poultry farm business.

How do I start my Poultry Farming business?

Growing up with my parents in the village we always had chickens which we bred for consumption and sometimes sale so when I decided to go into agriculture business after many failed attempt at several business ventures, Poultry farming business was a natural choice but what I did not know then was that there is a big difference between recreational rearing of chickens and rearing chickens as a profitable business, To cut the long story short I lost about N290,000 in my first poultry venture and that is why I have made up  this guide to make sure you avoid the mistakes I made.

There are a few points you should bear in mind before you start a poultry farming business.

  1. Poultry Type/ Breeds

Knowing the choice of poultry type and the breed is a key factor one has to put into consideration before opening a poultry farm. Poultry types include ducks, geese, chicken, guinea fowl, turkey, quail, and Ostrich. Chicken is the safest and most profitable poultry venture; Breeds include egg laying breed(Layers), meat production breed(Broilers). Feed production and hatchery is another key area of the poultry value chain. It is recommended as a beginner to pick one aspect and add if need be as you gather more experience in the business.

  1. Location/hazards

Location of any business is very important to its growth and its success. The location is associated with environmental conditions like rainfall, sunshine, topography, and vegetation, etc. Your poultry farm should be situated in an area which is not exposed to extreme climatic conditions. Environmental hazards determine the kind of habitat to raise a poultry farm. Hazards also include thieves, vandals, insects, disease outbreak, pollution, wild animals etc. In terms of location, one that is strategic and close to a target market will be of great advantage.
You want to get land as cheaply as possible so as a beginner you want to avoid expensive land purchases; It is better you lease land or even obtain from family/friends.

  1. Equipment

There are many Hatcheries which can deliver day old chicks to your farm. You will have to check the one that is very close to your farm and which has a proven ‘timely’ delivery record. This goes well with the feed companies too. The Poultry farming business guide also has contacts of hatcheries to source your day old chicks from as well as feeding/vaccination schedules.

  • You should opt for the latest feeding, watering & lighting equipment which will save you extra labour cost.
  • You need a good vet doctor who can visit your farm at regular intervals and who is easily approachable during crisis periods.
  • Keep a schedule for vaccinations and medication in consultation with a Vet.
  1. Target Market

Without a potential market, you can’t supply your poultry products. No business can thrive without a market. Before you venture into Poultry farming business, do a feasibility study on your potential market. Once a market is found, do further research to know if it’s for eggs, meat or both. This  Poultry farming business guide contains a feasibility study and business plan to help you get started much easily.

  1. Capital

You should be able to determine how much you require to rear your chicks from when they are a day old to when it is ready to be sold for slaughter or when it starts producing eggs. This is to enable you know how many birds you can afford to rear.

I have created an excel sheet to help you simplify this process and it comes free with our complete Poultry farming business guide (2017).

  1. Housing

Poultry housing are classified according to the scale and the management system. The most common types of poultry housing used for poultry farming in Nigeria are:

Deep Litter  System

In the deep litter system, birds are raised within four walls, over litter material which is of organic nature and capable of absorbing and releasing moisture to the atmosphere and also to serve as a bedding material for the birds.

Battery Cage System

Battery cages are a housing system commonly used for chicken production but primarily for egg-laying hens. The name arises from the arrangement of rows and columns of identical cages connected together, sharing common divider walls, as in the cells of a battery. While the initial set-up for a battery system is more expensive the advantages over time is worth the extra Naira.
